Lily Gardner Ù 7 REVIEW REVIEW A Bitch Called Hope Lennox Cooper #1 107 Chance to reestablish herself as a homicide detective During the course of the investigation she meets Mr Right Only problem he’s on the short list of suspects Lennox bets on her lover’s innocence The odds aren’t much better than drawing A Bitch Called Hope minor spoilers belowA strong debut The author did a good job of capturing a hard boiled pulp feel in a modern setting When some writers attempt noir they try a little too hard and cross the line from entertaining to ridiculous While the author came close to going over the top in a few of her passages she managed not to overdo itThe main character is wonderfully gritty and very human no Mary Sue here I liked that even when she was successful it wasn t pretty or perfect If she s in a shootout in a dark room you re not going to see a perfect cluster over the bad guy s heartMy chief uibble with the book was that some of the main character s choices seemed artificial as though they were solely for the sake of advancing the plot in a certain way One romantic interest felt particularly forced like it was just there so the author could check off the Love Scene box on her list of formulaic crime story elements A nude run through Portland also didn t work for me although the author tried explaining the character s motivation it just didn t ring trueAs for the mystery itself there were enough red herrings to keep me guessing until the end Overall I think this was uite a good first novel I ll definitely look for from this author
