review Ù eBook or Kindle ePUB º K. Anji Reddy K. Anji Reddy º 3 read & download read & download An Unfinished Agenda From his birth in a village in andhra to founding and running dr Reddy's laboratories now one of india's largest pharmaceutical enterprises dr K Anji reddy's journey makes for an inspiring story That story is told rivetingly in his own words in his memoir an unfinished agenda Dr Anji reddy became an entrepreneur at a time whe The autobiography of Dr Anji Reddy the late founder of Dr Reddy s Labs serves as a good insight into the development of the pharmaceutical industry in India post independence The life story of Dr Reddy and what he achieved is truly inspiring The book is relatively easy for a layman with a sufficient background in science to understand for the most part This is very much in contrast to the book I read on Biocon where the author never cared to explain the technical jargon The unfinished agenda in the title refers to Dr Reddy s aim to discover and commercialise a new drug in India No company so far has succeeded in the uest It reuires enormous resources and is a high risk gamble owing to high failure rates While Dr Reddy s Labs came agonisingly close on a couple of occasions success wasn t meant to be owing to factors not within their control Dr Reddy spends a considerable amount of time discussing the story of this journey in the book Nevertheless Dr Reddy put his personal money into the uest till death to ensure that the company s shareholders were ring fenced from the drain on cash flows Since the book was written in 2012 13 googling about this discovery venture Kareus Therapeutics doesn t seem to show any successes as of date Looking at the website one can conclude that the molecules expected to be a cure for Alzheimer s haven t gone anywhere I highly doubt the applicability of the Indian approach of frugal innovation for drug discovery which Dr Reddy thought could be the solution to keeping drug prices affordable for consumers while respecting patents The high cost of RD is what leads to higher drug prices and without high prices it is not possible to generate resources for future RD While that s an unsolved problem frugal research doesn t seem a likely solution The book can t serve as a primer to understand the India pharma industry given that it is meant to be the life story of an individual than the story of the industry s evolution but it nevertheless gives some colour on how some of the Indian pharma giants besides Dr Reddy s grew into the behemoths of today The Indian regulatory angle is totally missing which looks like a glaring omission even though 60% of the company s sales are exports driven The book could have done with better editing to cull out portions where Dr Reddy is merely reminiscing on random events in his life but I guess the publishers decided to keep the draft intact out of respect since the book wasn t published by the time he passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer
