A book which renders rating systems or less meaningless What does it mean to write a small but perfect book one which can be read on a surprisingly warm peripatetic winter afternoon in three different coffee shops and which imparts both ironic chuckles and genuine moments of human compassion Should such an achievement merit five stars despite the fact that the struggle of the couple and their loyal dog described in these pages seems purposefully muted as if the writer were careful to avoid the sort of bravura statements one expects from both ideological propaganda and extremely ambitious works of fiction And should this book receive points for concision alone since everybody knows great novellas or very short novels are as rare as hens teethCertainly we should give points for uniueness of tone I don t know if I ve ever experience such a strange blend of almost scientific detachment when focusing so closely on human canine relationships before especially considering that this detachment sometimes seems to be making fun of itself as if the main male character s Mr Ancsa job as a Communist engineer were being parodied without the reader entirely knowing what s happening Paragraphs like this one are well worth uoting at lengthHave dogs or have they not a conscience This is a uestion we should certainly ask if we knew the answer As we do not we confine ourselves to noting it down in the hope that one or other of our readers will know the answer and will have the kindness to convey it to us in a letter Have dogs a conscience then or precisely have they a good or a bad conscience Let us risk a hypothesis dogs are endowed in this field only with remorse and this remorse manifests itself in the fear which seizes them after transgressing one of the laws laid down for them The same phenomenon is far from uncommon among men as when they complain of the so called pangs of conscience But if dogs do not have a bad conscience it follows that they cannot have a good one unless by good conscience we mean a total want of any conscience at all in other words complete self satisfaction That indeed is a feeling very often to be met among mankind But if we consider conscience as an active process which entails everyone keeping an unfailing watch on the world from the point of view of his personal responsibility constantly deciding what must be done issuing authorizations or prohibitions condemning an absolving guiding his life from the first conscious moment until the last why in that case the uestion whether animals including Niki have or have not a conscience good or bad should in our opinion receive a negative answer although with reservations It is in this that animals differ from man man can in the long run develop a conscience And by thus stating the terms of the problem with the utmost strictness we are forced to the conclusion that essentially it was in this and only in this that Niki differed from her master Janos AncsaWhat a masterpiece of tightly controlled irony especially when you consider that Dery was writing it during the Stalinist purges in late 40 s Hungary the years depicted being roughly contemporaneous and that he was blacklisted while composing it So many delightful hesitation clauses The invitation to the reader to answer the uestion in a letter There are many such delightful paragraphs throughout the course of the book many of them not uite as light as the one above especially after Janos Ancsa is arrested and imprisoned for a nonsensical five year prison term I particularly liked this example of withering disdainCan an animal lie whether to itself or to any other creature The problem is a most arduous one and to resolve it we shall do better to have recourse to brains vaster and subtle than our own for instance to some statesman s brains for in our opinion statesmen are without exception and from birth expert in all things and infallible notably in psychologyBut if the whole book were just this kind of ironic skewering it would be very cold indeed what s remarkable about the novella is that the descriptions of Niki are just as visceral as they are cerebral The language describing the way animals run and jump manages to make uotidian movement seem uite beautiful Suddenly a hare started from a field of wheat it was probably the first Niki had ever seen And at that it was less a hare than a flash of earth colored lightning then trembling ears of wheat and a white scut vanishing into the waving corn stalks the bitch s muzzle was no than a single leap from the short stiff tail of the hare and the feral scent of her coat and the her whole body in violent action shocked their nostrilsI can t read Hungarian but the English translation does a good job relating both the humor and the muscular rhythms of these actions segmentsControl is the key here Dery uses the omniscient ironical narrator to temper some of the possibilities for maudlin sentimentality that are inherent in your typical dog meets prisoner of a communist regime story but the visceral language commands your attention and sympathy By the end of the novel you feel as if you ve actually experience the six years described as if you were a sympathetic neighbor who lived next door to the Ancsas and could see them in a clear eyed but empathetic fashion Surprisingly painful in the end Oh hell let s give it five stars I read it a week ago and I haven t stopped thinking about it A small perfect book

Moving intelligent artful That s all I ask for in a book and this modest little book delivers marred only by some gently outdated attitudes The descriptions of a dog s experience of life are insightful and wise and the way peripheral way it addresses life in the age of the gulag is subtle powerful It has none of the heaviness of Solzhenitsyn but is somehow just weighty enough Niki is just an ordinary dog an every dog but we love her all the for that What a writer I ll be checking out of Dery s work and that of his contemporary Sandor Marai
