The Book of Greek and Roman Folktales, Legends, and Myths

The Book of Greek and Roman Folktales, Legends, and Myths review ☆ 3 The first anthology ever to present the entire range of ancient Greek and Roman stories from myths and fairy tales to jokes Captured centaurs and satyrs talking animals people who suddenly change sex men who give birth the temporarily insane and the permanently thick witted delicate sensualists incompetent seers a woman who remembers too much a man who cannot laugh these are just some of the colorful characters who feature in the unforgettable stories that ancient Greeks and Romans told in their daily lives Together they created an incredibly rich body. This is not another handbook of Greek and Roman myths about gods and heroes For that go to Pierre Grimal Robin Hard Timothy Gantz or with care Robert Graves the retellings not the commentaries for the Greek ones and to T P Wiseman for the Roman ones No this is a book of folktales legends and curious stories gathered from the whole range of Greek and Roman literature with the gods and heroes conspicuously absent I found it a delightful read not at all bone dry as one reviewer found it and read a page or two a day until I finished itWilliam Hansen provides a useful introduction and appendix with discussions of the genres represented here he classifies the stories constructively and provides full references and a bibliography He also provides commentaries on many but not all of the stories Some of these are helpful but some simply paraphrase the story just told which seems pointless Still there is no other book I am aware of which does what this book sets out to do and largely does i can t imagine interested in the classical world not wanting to have it and read itThe presentation of the book is not worthy of its content The paper is adeuate but the pages are glued not bound in signatures Instead of a proper dust jacket the title information is printed on the cover Princeton are of course perfectly capable of producing a decent book I am currently reading Mark Williams s Ireland s Immortals about Irish mythology which is a model of presentation They should have done a similar job here I am therefore deducting one star But get it all the same
